What is vaginal atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis) refers to the thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls as a result of your body producing less oestrogen. Without oestrogen, vaginal tissue becomes more delicate, sensitive and more exposed to trauma. It is estimated that over 294 million women worldwide suffer with symptoms of vaginal atrophy, 75% of which will go untreated.
Vaginal atrophy is common amongst women during and after the menopause, although women are also more likely to suffer from symptoms during breastfeeding, after having ovaries removed surgically or after treatment for cancer. Women with vaginal atrophy also have a greater chance of urinary function problems and it can also make sexual intercourse painful.
What are the symptoms of vaginal atrophy?
In some Women symptoms occur during perimenopause, in others symptoms may not appear until years after. Symptoms of VA can include:
- Vaginal dryness
- Vaginal burning
- Genital itching
- Discomfort or pain during intercourse

Consultant Gynaecologist, Miss Shohreh Beski explains how Micro-Fragmented Adipose Tissue (MFAT) can help…
“My special interest is in the menopause as I am one of those ladies who has gone through that and I have seen and felt myself, what problems it brings.
For women at this age, their vagina and vulva can be affected by the decrease of hormones and they can often tell me that they do not wish to have any further sexual intercourse and this is because of the dryness and pain experienced.
The new technique, which I am excited about is our Lipogems® (MFAT) treatment. It has been used for painful joints (orthopaedics) in over 30,000 patients by extracting repair cells or Mesenchymal stem cells and seeing joint pain decrease. We have also seen great benefits for postmenopausal women by restoring vaginal health.
We have seen the significant benefits of their postmenopausal symptoms and also how it worked in other ways which we didn’t expect for example, for urinary stress incontinence.”
