Shockwave is an effective non-invasive and regenerative therapy, also referred to as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). How can EMTT help?​

Energetic magnetic waves induce the formation of new blood vessels (a process known as neovascularisation). This improved blood supply in turn leads to an increase in cell proliferation and tissue regeneration in the affected area.

The process​

EMTT is a non-invasive, outpatient treatment in which the instrument head is held over the targeted area. High energy magnetic pulses are then transmitted through the clothes, skin and tissues to reach the target area. The energy waves create a controlled trauma that causes an increase in blood circulation which triggers enzyme production in the affected area. This in turn promotes and accelerates healing and reduces pain. Depending on what’s being treated it generally involves a course of 4-6 sessions, with each session taking part five to ten days apart.

Frequently asked questions

You would not be suitable for shockwave therapy if:

  • You have a circulation or nerve disorder
  • The target area is infected
  • The target area has a bone condition
  • The target area has an open wound
  • You are pregnant 
  • You are on blood thinning medication
  • You are under 18
  • You have metal pins/objects in the target area

Certain medications may be contraindicated such as, anticoagulants or corticosteroids but this would first need to be discussed with your clinician during your consultation.

Each shockwave therapy session at Living Room Health is around 20 minutes.

Typically a patient would be advised to have 4-6 shockwave therapy sessions, with each session 5-10 days apart or maximum benefits.

Shockwave therapy, is a non-invasive procedure which most people find painless. However, depending on the area being treated (if near bone) and the severity of your injury you might feel a little pain or discomfort in the treatment area during the procedure.

Most patients say it feels like small pulses against the skin. Your specialist may be able to adjust the way they use the shockwave device if your pain is significant.

You can book yourself directly in for your shockwave consultation and treatment. During the consultation, your clinician will assess you functionally and scan area using ultrasound to confirm a diagnosis and assess the tissue. In some cases if suspected stress fracture, an MRI scan may be required which we can do on site at an extra cost. 

We advise you wear something loose fitting around the area you want treated so the clinician can have access. If not, we can provide a robe and somewhere to change. Some gel will need to be applied to the area for the procedure. 

Yes, you will be able to walk after your shockwave therapy. Your clinician and physiotherapist will guide you with a graded rehabilitation program with the shockwave therapy.

How does it work?

Shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues with subacute, sub chronic and chronic conditions.
