Dr Alistair Phillips

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Elbow
PGCert (Med Ed) FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Background

Mr Alistair Phillips is a specialist in the treatment of hand, wrist, and elbow conditions, with a particular focus on the use of local anaesthetics. He frequently performs procedures under local anaesthetic that would traditionally have required a tourniquet and/or general anaesthetic. Having witnessed the significant benefits for patients, he is now dedicated to advancing this approach.

Expertise

From the initial consultation, Mr Phillips’ empathy for his patients is evident. He has carefully structured his care pathways to prioritise patient-centred treatment. This includes minimising unnecessary appointments, administering local anaesthetic injections with minimal discomfort, operating only when truly necessary, and ensuring patients remain fully informed before, during (as they remain awake and alert), and after surgery. His aim is to keep patients engaged and empowered throughout their care journey.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Phillips is the co-founder and chairman of a charitable organisation dedicated to educating surgeons worldwide on the WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet) technique. He has lectured internationally on the subject, including at the combined Belgian and Dutch Hand Societies meeting in March 2019, and served as faculty at the inaugural UK WALANT course held in Wrightington in May 2021.
